It's been two years today since the passing of our friend Rebecca Robbins and I wanted to talk about her.

Sonja mentioned Robin, Kermit's cousin, in passing, which led to three days of singing The Rainbow Connection to baby. She cannot get enough. Especially this Kermit and Debbie Harry duet:
Turns out baby loves Paul Williams. Baby sings along. Karen Carpenter also a big hit.
Welcome baby's new friend, Gala!!!

more baby pics, as in music baby digs:
Sade
Gene Clark
ok that last one is a melanie shiff art piece. she's holding up neil young's first self-titled album, one I am quite fond of, and the painting by Joni Mitchell on the cover reminds me of that Gene Clarke Tribute album cover art. I did a cover of one of the songs off that album, but all vocals. you know, trumpet vocals, etc. it was pretty funny and i don't know if i'll ever be able to hear it again as i recorded it on the then cutting edge recording technology known as the DA-88. my years at art school featured much learning of soon to be obsolete machines and software. except pro-tools. that continues to be extremely valuable...
baby is trying really hard to sing along to Kellarissa's "Tiny Things" off her very new release Flamingo.
which is awesome! and you can be part of the release celebrations this Saturday at VIVO on Main St at 9 pm.
Les Beyond
and Hello, Blue Roses (yup that's us) are opening up, should be a fun time and the last time we'll be playing in Vancouver in a long while.

Blogging will most likely continue to be scant due to the fact that i had a baby. And because she is so cute, all i want to do is stare at her and keep my mind blank for the study of baby facery. Not to mention that most free time is a toss up between a phone call or a shower. Once things develop a more predictable rhythym, I hope to finish The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano and continue working on artist statement, my most hated activity, and the reason i am writing this here now.
By the fall i should be back in tune with the outside world.
So far the music baby likes:
Kate Bush's Aerial
Donovan's Greatest Hits
Mozart for Mom and Baby
Arvo Part's Alina
The Beatles
The Songs of Leonard Cohen
and most favourite:
Pet Sounds! (Beach Boys) A record I also love though admittedly it is starting to drive me mental and has infiltrated my dreams.
I found this image on Jezebel, one of my daily reads, where lately there are many discussions about birth, motherhood, etc. Many of which i like to call the Second Trimester nagging doubts that haunt many pregnant women these days. more on this later. Le plus ca change...

A thousand apologies to Julia and the rest of the staff at JJ Bean on Powell, the incident about refusing me, at the time hugely pregnant, use of the washroom did not take place there but at BEAN AROUND THE WORLD on Powell. So, LONG LIVE JJ BEAN ON POWELL and down with Bean Around the World on Powell.
Again, I will try to be more vigilant when next i go off and get the name right to avoid such misplaced malevolence.

while this time last year, i was happily busy clearing ut my studio and spring cleaning to my heart's content, this year the bedbugs made me do it!!
Nasty little creatures that try to eat my baby. Lay off my parasite, parasites!
in my last term i am supposed to be relaxing (and not eating sugar and exercising after every meal) NOT packing up my worldy possessions into plastic crates and doing 160 lbs of laundry.
my poor friend Kazi who came out from T.O to Vancouver for horrible not spring yet relapse and bedbug cleaning patrol!!
cut to me and Kaz at crappy Ramada Inn on Granville for two nights while the insecticide chilled out.
not to mention the phantom bedbugs bites that we will dream about for years.
needless to say, i am never even entering a thrift store or buying a not new piece of furniture for the rest of my life.
anyhowl, won't bore with details and expenses, and long days of assembling replacement IKEA furniture. You win IKEA, you win with your particular brand of garbage that now furnishes our sleeps, our clothes, our meals, you win. My life as a scrounger, troller of craigslist, fan of thrift stores the world over, gone!
Win also does the local Starbucks. See, when Kazi and I were homeless for the day, we went to JJ bean on Powell , a local shoppe i used to frequent while still enjoying deli meat sandwiches from La Grotta, which they supply. On this particular bathroomless day, we went there and i had a decaf latte and a glass of milk. Like other people carrying around a small anvil on the bladder, i needed to go. And not only do they not have customer washrooms-a place that can seat over ten people, and serves beverages and food, but when i asked if i could use the staff toilet, i was also refused. It's simple etiquette. If someone is pregnant, elderly or just really has to go, you let em, that's the decent thing to do. So we had to go to Starbucks and use the washroom.
Lucky for them, the petty wizard in me is just too tired to call the city and enquire about the legality of their set-up, cause it's pretty borderline, in both tables to counter proximity and lack of facilities.
In the meantime, I wish the three under twenty year olds who work there a strong bout of incontinence at the wrong place and the wrong time.
IF I had not been banished from my home due to pesticide spray, I would have let her rip right in the middle of the place. And walked the five minutes home.
Shoulda gone to Solder and Sons, the new coffee and book store at Main and Cordova. For coffee that is, not to use the loo. Even though they are for sure not legally bound to provide lavs, as its a four seater and do not serve food, i bet they would have let me.
ok, so this post is about pests, pee, and ikea.
Here we are post IKEA.
happy birthday KAZI!!!!! may there be no bedbugs in your life,
